A Patong Beach and coral reef clean up will be held on December 16, in conjunction with the Phuket Carnival. The carnival is arguably the island’s most colourful event, running from December 15 to 20 in Patong, to officially open Phuket’s tourism season.

Included in the carnival is a beach and coral reef clean up, titled the “Patong Beach Clean-up Competition 21st Patong Beach and Marine Conservation Project”, organised by the Patong Municipality, Marine and Coastal Conservation Centre, and the Thai Diving Association (TDA).

Members of the public who wish to help clean up the beach, and divers who are able to help remove rubbish from the coral reef in Patong Bay, are advised to meet at 8am at the corner of Bangla Rd and Thaweewong Rd to register.

The clean up will take place at 9am, followed by a performance, an environment exhibition, games, and a local sports competition. There will be prizes for those who collect the most rubbish.

Somying Puangprasan, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources Phuket Office Project Coordinator said: “We hope for around three to four divers in each team, with a total of 25 teams. We will provide the diving equipment apart from wetsuits. Long-tail boats will transport the divers to the reef.”
