Samui eyes sports tourism

Samui Municipality will host the first Samui Triathlon, 2012 22 April and hopes the event will kick-start a wave of sports tourism to the holiday island.

But the announcements come late with organisers releasing information just two weeks before the Samui Triathlon 2012 is due to take place on the island’s Bo Phut Beach.

Samui Municipality mayor, Ramnate Chaikwang, told TTR Weekly that this is the first time Samui has hosted such an ambitious event.

“We believe we can create a niche in sports tourism,” he said.

The competition will be have two distinct events; a triathlon and duathlon.

The first will feature three sports disciplines. They are: Swimming, 4 km; cycling, 122.65 km and running, 30 km. The second event will feature just two activities running,15 km and cycling, 44.5 km.

It is estimated that around 500 athletes from Germany, Switzerland, France, New Zealand, Luxembourg, Australia, Spain, Austria, Sweden, and Hungary will participate. Confirmed professional competitors include Faris Al Sultan, Caroline Steffen, Alexandra Louison and etc.

The Samui Triathlon 2012 is hosted by the Samui Municipality and supported by Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, the Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, the Triathlon Association of Thailand and Singha Corporation Company.
