Bangkok is second best place to go shopping in the world

The Thai capital of Bangkok has been named as the second best shopping destination in the world after New York City, according to a new survey released last month.

The survey was released by travel website TripAdvisor at the end of December after more than 75,000 responses to questions about 40 major cities across the globe were analysed.

And the results of the survey confirmed what we at Absolute Thai, one of the premier Thai magazines, have long believed: that Bangkok really is one of the best places in the world to shop.

Bangkok came second in the poll, ahead of Dubai, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

And it was not just the quality of the shopping, frequently featured in articles in Thai magazines, which were singled out for praise in the survey.

Bangkok also ranked among the best cities in the world for value for money, after Portugal’s Lisbon and Hungary’s Budapest, another quality which is regularly written about in any number of Thai magazines online.

Meanwhile the city’s residents also got thumbs up in the survey. Visitors voted Bangkok as the seventh city in the ‘friendliest locals’ category after Mexico’s Cancun, Tokyo, Lisbon, Istanbul, Croatia’s Dubrovnik and Cape Town, a city which is also featured in our latest edition of our Thai magazine online.

TripAdvisor spokesperson Jean Ow-Yeong said: “Whilst the greatness of a city isn’t defined by just these factors, cleanliness, safety, value-for-money, ease of using local transport and even the friendliness of locals can be important when it comes to rating a city.”

“It is therefore encouraging to see that Asian cities like Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur have ranked favourably on the world stage for many of these categories,” she added.
