“Tribes – an Evening with JP Dutilleux”

Posted on December 12, 2013

A rare event was enjoyed at the Atmanjai Detox and Wellness Center this month, “Tribes – an Evening with JP Dutilleux”. The lights were dimmed and a small candle was lit, bringing the listeners closer as Jean-Pierre began his tales of adventures lived over the past 20 years. As a documentary film maker and author, JP has devoted his life to documenting the lives of little know tribes people across the world.

With the scene set, he skillfully lead the audience through dense jungles, across raging rivers and into villages inhabited by cannibals in Irian Jaya. The tension in the air was almost tangible as he told of being surrounded by head hunters, moving on to unanimous chuckles as he relived escaping the authorities in Brasilia with an Indian Tribesman friend.

Concluding with a message for us all from the tribes people, JP discussed some of the environmental issues of encroaching development, devastating the jungles and in turn their traditional lives. In the words of Chief Raoni, supreme leader of Kayapo Indian Nation in Brazil, “I need your support before it is too late”.

We look forward to JP revisting Phuket and enticing us with new tales of adventures and tribes, as he strives to build awareness of these tribes and their importance globally.
