Fried banana: a favourite Phuket snack

If you’re in Phuket Town and in need of a snack, stop by one of the island’s most famous gluay tod (fried banana) stalls on Ranong Road, opposite the main market.

The “Chamcha” stall has been selling this delicious food for around 13 years, and has a loyal following of customers. Two different types of banana are used: either ripe, or almost ripe, bananas.

Making fried banana is pretty simple. First the bananas are peeled and sliced, and for the batter, flour sugar, salt and water is mixed together in a bowl.

When it’s time to make gluay tod, pour oil into the frying pan and heat it up. Then, dip the bananas in the batter and deep fry the banana until it is golden brown. Then the delicious snack is served.

The stall is open from 10.30am to 3.30pm, and one piece of fried banana is B2.
