Phuket to open Turtle Shelter & Education Centre

Work is set to begin this October on a new facility dedicated to the protection and conservation of Phuket’s endangered sea turtles, which face multiple threats from commercial fishing, consuming or becoming entangled in ocean litter and being hit by speedboats.

Saturday 29th March 2014, saw Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation and JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa held a press conference to announce details of the project which is to be called the Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Centre. In attendance at the press conference were distinguished VIP’s including Phuket Vice Governor – Jamroen Tippayyapongthada, representatives of the organizations involved in the project and media from Bangkok & Phuket.

Due to open during Songkran 2015, the Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Centre will be located at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa on land donated by the resort and its owning company Minor Corporation for the project. It will be the first resort in Asia-Pacific to have such a facility situated on site. Resort guests and the general public will be able to see and interact with the turtles including being able to feed them, clean their tanks and learn about their lifecycle, as well as help clean the beach and plant coral in the area.

Construction of the facility will begin as soon as the water system plans and Green Energy power system are completed, and the design and concept are finalized.

“JW Marriott Phuket & the Minor Corporation are donating the land to the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation for the Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Centre and together with its partner the PMBC we are confident that this will help sustain the ecological future of Marine turtles by building a dedicated turtle Shelter for 4 injured marine sea turtles that need a home.

“I look forward to an exciting year ahead and welcoming the injured turtles to their new home, and welcoming you to the for the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation turtle release on Songkran day on April 13th 2014, or to the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation Fun Run on the 14th September this year.”
