Calling themselves the ‘Green Paddlers’, James Forsythe and Dan Magie – educators at Phuket International Academy Day School (PIADS) – were joined by Kerry Dyke and Kenny Peavy in a kayaking trip to plot sightings of turtles, sharks, reefs, plastic waste, organic waste and encroachment, as well as to take note of the conditions of mangroves and reefs.

The 10 day journey began at Anantara Phuket Villas in Mai Khao and – after a circumnavigation of the island –  finished with the quartet’s arrival at the nearby JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa, where they submitted their findings to the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation.

As well as recording valuable environmental information, the paddlers will also be carrying a pledge letter with them for a Fin Free Phuket to encourage businesses to sign up for the campaign, part of the global Freeland initiative.

The information gathered will be submitted to Fin Free Thailand, the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, Shark Guardians, Phuket Provincial Government, Phuket Marine Biological Center, The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Prince of Songkla University Environmental Faculty, Royal Thai Navy Third Command, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and the National Parks Division.

Local environmental group SEEK Phuket are supporting with their network of NGO and government agencies along with the various Phuket Green Clubs. This will enable the results to be used for the Phuket Sustainability Indicator plan.

The trip is being documented on video, and the Green Paddlers will interview key persons and community members along the way about their environmental efforts, solutions and challenges.

They were welcomed at different locations along the west coast by the Phuket Green Clubs and their members, who have been engaging in beach cleaning activities.

At Panwa beach, the Green Paddlers submitted their findings to the Phuket Marine Biology Center and the Royal Thai Navy in person.
