Uber has launched a new sightseeing tour and transfer service in Phuket.

Launched on January 22nd, Uber Phuket customers can visit some of the most popular viewpoints and landmarks on the island using the new UberTour service.

The UberTour costs 1500 THB and includes a scenic 4-5 hour drive around Phuket, stopping at various points around the island including the Phromthep Cape, Karon/Kata viewpoint, the Big Buddha temple and the Chalong temple before returning you to your pickup point.

Until January 30th, UberTour customers can get 20% off by entering the promo code UBERTOURLAUNCH when booking their tour.

Since its launch, the controversial taxi app has hit the headlines around the world and Thailand is no exception.

In December the service was officially declared illegal by the Department of Land Transport but after negotiations with the government was allowed to continue operating in Bangkok and Phuket, despite widespread protests from local taxi drivers.

It will be interesting to see how the local tour operators and taxi drivers in Phuket react to the launch of the UberTour service, which is likely to be seen as further threat to the livelihoods of drivers on the island.

That said, it is fair to say that some of the taxi drivers on Phuket perhaps haven’t exactly endeared themselves to foreign tourists and expats.

There are regular reports of foreigners being ripped off by taxi drivers on the island and it has also been alleged that some taxi drivers in Phuket have links to organised criminal gangs and have engaged in extortion and threatening behaviour.

Despite the controversy surrounding Uber, customers have spoken positively about the service, commenting on its  ease of use, high standard of vehicles and professionalism of its drivers.

With regards to UberTour in Phuket, although 1500 THB might be slightly more expensive than what a local taxi driver may charge, users of the mobile taxi app may think that paying a little extra is worthwhile.
