Thai AirAsia experienced a sharp rise in passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2015.

The Bangkok-based low-cost carrier handled 3.7 million passengers in the three-month period, 19% more than in Q1 2014. The airline also managed to increase its aircraft load factors by three percentage points to 83%.

Thai AirAsia added three domestic routes in Q1, connecting Bangkok with Nan, Loei and Roi Et, and increased the frequency of its services to Phnom Penh, Nakhon Phanom and Phuket. This growth was driven by the arrival of two more 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft, which increased the airline’s total fleet to 42 aircraft.

“Our performance in Q1 2015 serves as an affirmation that the overall growth of Thailand’s tourism sector… [following the] political situation of 2014. Nonetheless, we will continue to work diligently, effectively manage our capital and seek out new business opportunities to achieve strong performance returns in the remaining quarters of this year,” said Thai AirAsia’s CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld.

The airline generated net profits of THB506m (US$15m) in the first quarter of 2015, with revenues totalling THB7.73 billion.
