Thailand expects Chinese New Year tourism boost

Posted on January 16, 2017

Thailand expects to welcome 825,000 international visitors during the forthcoming Chinese New year holiday period.

The total, which was revealed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), would mark a 4% increase over the 794,000 visitors welcomed last year. This year’s Chinese New Year holiday period runs from 27 January to 2 February 2017.

The number of visitors from mainland China however, is forecast to decline by 9% to 240,000. This is largely due to a fall in charter flights caused by a crackdown on so-called “zero-dollar tours”.

The number of Chinese visitors from other countries is expected to increase to around 149,000.
